The workshop was opened by the Lord Mayor on 6th May and hosted by the DIT Department of Transport Engineering. It was organised by Hugh Finlay (national focal point) and by Roisin Byrne and attended by 32 participants including 8 speakers, representing government, municipalities and businesses. Developments reported included research into noise abatement for night deliveries, bio-fuels in fleet operation in Cork and freight planning in London. A vision of sustainable cities of the future was illustrated. Issues raised included more effective integration between spatial and transport planning, data for decision support systems, underpinning the investments in infrastructure with a dedicated research budget. This was the second BESTUFS workshop hosted in Dublin since 29th April 2003.
