Solutions for Air Quality and Noise Problems in Urban Freight Transport
Air quality and noise in urban areas are currently hot topics on the political agendas. European and national regulations are in force that put threshold values for noise and emission levels in urban areas. Transport is the biggest contributor to the air quality problems and urban freight transport has its share in this. Nowadays the problems have already become serious and slow down the economic development of urban agglomerations. In the city of The Hague for instance there are severe problems to meet the required air quality. This situation is a serious obstacle in the planning and construction of new residential and industrial areas. Also the maximum allowed traffic speeds on motorways nearby urban areas have recently been lowered to reduce the amount of noise and emissions in order to satisfy the threshold values.
Given these issues that are rising in several cities and countries Europe, BESTUFS decided to organise a conference on "Solutions for Air Quality and Noise Problems in Urban Freight Transport" in close co-operation with the PIEK programme and SenterNOVEM.
This conference was taken place on June 23rd and 24th in the RAI Conference Centre in Amsterdam. During this conference the problems were outlined and views and solutions of different stakeholders, such as municipalities, shippers and vehicle manufacturers were presented. Specific attention was paid to solutions that focus on improvements of vehicle technology. At the conference there was an opportunity to view the demonstration of a number of innovative clean and silent distribution vehicles.
