Broadmead Consolidation Centre
This trial started in May 2004 and is being supported as part of the EU-funded Vivaldi project which is part of the CIVITAS programme. Retail space in the Broadmead retail area of Bristol (which includes the Broadmead Shopping Centre) is expected to expand by 40% over the next five years so the need to manage urban freight movements has become increasingly important for Bristol City Council. As a result, it has selected Exel to implement and manage a trial consolidation centre. Exel manage and route all deliveries going into the city centre leading to a significant reduction in vehicles and urban freight emissions. Suitable customers for the trial were identified as "medium size, non-perishable goods, not high value goods".The distribution centre is located close to strategic road network (M4 & M32) and 11 km from the target retail area; and has 5,000 sq. ft. of space. Deliveries take place from the centre with one 7.5t and one 17t Euro III standard engine vehicles. The scheme currently serves 51 retailers (October 2005).Value-added services are being offered to customers at the distribution centre including waste and packaging collection, item level inventory management, and seasonal and peak storage facilities. The number of roll cages which passed through the centre rose from 101 in May 2004 to 401 in December 2004. The scheme has resulted in a 68% reduction in vehicle trips into Bristol centre for participating retailers. Up to October 2005, 42,772 total vehicle km; 5.29t of CO2 emissions; 840 gms of NOx and 11,374 gms of PM10 emissions had been saved.
