Thematic focus:
Definitions, data sources and data collection methods about Urban Goods Movement
Within a group of about 20 experts the state of the art of urban freight data collection was presented for a choice of six European countries. The experiences of the different data collection methods were discussed but also different levels of data availability identified. Also the use of the data and statistics for different purposes and the question of harmonization of data collection were regarded within the vive discussions around the table.
Overall, the round table gave the opportunity to discuss in a very diversified expert group the current state of the art with regard to urban freight data sources and data collection methods. It got clear that even in case of the existence of dedicated guidelines for the data collection as given e.g. by the EC with regard to data collection on national goods transport on road, the actual execution within the different EC countries differs enormously. By sharing ideas and information and producing overviews of existing freight data collection in different countries, the BESTUFS project will prove very valuable in comparing and contrasting different approaches in data collection. It can also be concluded that depending on the actual use of the data and in future, not only standardised surveys will be done. The clear benefits from the broader exchange of knowledge on this topic on a European level are that the responsible administrations/bodies will have good and practical examples available in order to spend the limited budgets in a more efficient manner.
